What I learned about preparing was more than I ever expected. Preparation for anything big can make a difference in the results you are aiming for. This is what I learned over the past six months after making the decision to walk 2 miles five to six days a week.
You see I had a goal to get in the best shape possible to prepare my body and my mindset for my foot surgery that many of you know is coming up in soon. I have been talking up a storm about this foot surgery and driving my husband crazy talking about it! I admit that because I have been through this same type of surgery before, I am a bit nervous that I will be immobile for a period of time. Let’s just say sitting still isn’t something I do well, not in MY DNA, I’m constantly on the go! That is part of the description of my work as a personal concierge, on the go!
So this leads into the topic of this blog. People see me as a planner, personal concierge, organizer and a life/solution strategist. My plan this past summer was to strengthen my legs even more, so that when I am walking on those darn crutches for six weeks I would not be struggling. It’s hard enough walking on two sticks so I figured I would be proactive and be the best I can be before this surgery happens.
What I have learned over the past months from taking to the road and building this habit is that I could walk through the pain because my goal was my focus. No matter what the weather forecast was for that day I made it a habit to walk on those planned days. I used that time I was walking for many things. Time to problem solve, think about my business goals for the next day, plan little details for any upcoming personal commitments, challenge my endurance, relax and enjoy the scenery and so much more!
There was one thing that I did not have any expectations about or had in my plan for these walks. I lost weight! Not surprising though it was the furthest thing from my mind. Now to know me you have to understand I have been exercising for over thirty years and I have changed it up a bit every time I hit a road block with my exercise routine. Being a super woman has never been my goal, I just want to take care of me and stay strong. You will never hear me use the word “Old”, so let’s just say that I listen to my body as the years pass by. This walking thing just made sense for me personally at this time. I could definitely do this and prepare myself for what was in my life plan. When I decided to set this six-month goal for myself I had one goal in mind, to strengthen my body. Let’s just say it was my solution.
Preparing for my surgery by incorporating daily walking has taught me that I not only can think through some of the things that used to keep me up at night while I was walking I could learn and gain so much more. It was my way of using this time to build my physical strength, for productivity, my personal way to meditate and a different way reach for my goals. I lost a few pounds in the process and I also grew my business to a new level. Who would have thought!
My message to you is that you can do ANYTHING you truly want if you prepare, be intentional and take action. I WOWED myself with the outcome of my efforts. I challenge you to hit the road, incorporate walking, running or hiking whatever works for you and see what you can accomplish, reach your goals and live your best life! Just get moving!
When you take a different approach in something that is important, whether it be a personal goal or career goal, preparing is key. I would love to hear back from you on how you do with this.
